Bottomless vs. spouted portafilter
One shows you what the puck did; the other hides it and keeps the counter clean. The coffee is nearly the same either way.
| Aspect | Bottomless portafilter | Portafilter |
|---|---|---|
| What you can see | The underside of the basket throughout the shot — channelling, uneven wetting, cracked pucks | Nothing below the basket |
| Effect on taste | Marginal. Some report a less homogenised result; the difference is small and contested | Marginal, in the other direction — the chamber mixes the shot |
| Splitting a shot into two cups | No | Yes, with a double spout |
| Mess | Sprays across the machine when the puck is uneven | Contained |
| Best used for | Learning and diagnosing | Everyday use once things are working |
Which should you choose?
Buy the bottomless one to learn with, not to upgrade with. It is the cheapest diagnostic instrument in espresso and it will show you faults that taste alone cannot separate — and once your shots are even, plenty of people go back to spouts for the tidiness and keep the bottomless for when something changes.
