Ready-to-drink coffee and concentrates

Bottled/canned coffee, cold-brew concentrate and coffee concentrate, explained — and how they differ from home-brewed cold coffee.

Ready-to-drink (RTD) coffee

Bottled or canned iced coffee, ready-to-drink lattes and nitro coffee are commercially processed products, typically pasteurised or aseptically packaged for shelf stability, distinct from homemade cold coffee prepared and consumed shortly after brewing.

Cold-brew concentrate versus espresso concentrate

Cold-brew concentrate is made by steeping coarse grounds in cold/room-temperature water for many hours, then diluting before drinking — see CoffeeHQ's cold-brew dilution calculator. Espresso-style concentrates are made by hot extraction at high concentration, a different process producing a different flavour profile, both requiring dilution to typical drinking strength.

Nitro coffee

Nitro coffee is cold brew infused with nitrogen gas (similar to nitro stout beer), producing a creamy texture and cascading visual effect without necessarily adding dairy.

Pasteurisation and aseptic packaging

Commercially bottled RTD coffee is typically pasteurised (heat-treated to kill microorganisms) and packaged aseptically to achieve a genuine shelf-stable product — a different food-safety category from home-refrigerated cold brew, which should be treated as perishable and used within a few days to about a week, refrigerated.

Sugar, dairy and plant-based versions

RTD coffee ranges from unsweetened black to heavily sweetened milk-based drinks; sugar content varies enormously between products and is worth checking on the label rather than assumed. Dairy and plant-based RTD versions behave differently in texture and shelf stability, similar to the same distinction in fresh milk drinks.

Caffeine and serving size

RTD serving sizes and caffeine content vary substantially by product and brand — check the specific label rather than assuming parity with a home-brewed cup of the same volume.

Packaging waste

Single-serve bottles and cans generate more packaging waste per serving than brewing at home; recyclability varies by local waste system and container material.
