Percolator
Boiling water is repeatedly forced up a tube and showered back over the grounds, recirculating until the coffee is strong — a design that predates most of what CoffeeHQ covers and is still widely owned.
How it works
Water in the base is heated until it boils, and the pressure of the steam drives it up a central tube into a perforated basket of coarse grounds at the top. It filters down through them into the base, is heated again, and the cycle repeats — which is the important part: the same coffee is brewed over and over, at or near boiling, for as long as the pot is on the heat. That recirculation is what produces a percolator's strong, heavy character, and it is also why the design has been superseded for specialty brewing.

Cleaning & maintenance
Wash the basket and tube after each use; coffee oils accumulate in the tube and go rancid where they are easy to overlook.
Descale the base on the same schedule as a kettle, adjusted for your water hardness and following the manufacturer's instructions.
Check the basket seal and the tube for blockages.

Fewer things on the counter and less to do. It also couples the two purchases: an integrated grinder cannot be upgraded separately, and its adjustment range is whatever the manufacturer allowed.

This is the upgrade path. A machine that accepts a single-wall basket can make real espresso once there is a grinder to match; one that cannot is capped wherever it is.
Water and pressure release

You choose the water, which is the cheapest way to control scale and taste. It also needs emptying and cleaning: a tank left standing grows things, and a machine left full over a holiday is worse than one left empty.
