Yirgacheffe
Yirgacheffe is a district of southern Ethiopia and, as a coffee name, a registered trademark. The Ethiopian government owns it for coffee in the United States, where it was registered in 2006, and the World Intellectual Property Organization records registrations in the European Union, Canada and Japan. Ethiopia chose trademarks over geographical indications, so the registration ties the name to an owner and a royalty-free licence, not to a boundary, an altitude or a method. In export records for 2006 to 2013, coffee sold as Yirgacheffe was more likely to be washed than coffee sold as Sidama, small in volume and higher in price. The Ethiopia entry explains the rest.
