Cleaning vs. descaling
Two different deposits, two different chemicals, two different schedules. Confusing them is how machines get damaged.
| Aspect | Espresso cleaning detergent | Descaler |
|---|---|---|
| What it removes | Coffee oils and residue — organic, oily | Calcium and magnesium scale — mineral |
| Chemistry | Alkaline detergent | Acid |
| Where it works | The group head, baskets, portafilter, brewers | Inside the boiler, element and water paths |
| How often | Weekly to monthly for home use, per the manual | Set by water hardness and the manufacturer, not by appearance |
| Symptom it fixes | Stale, rancid-tasting coffee | Slow flow, long heat-up, cool brewing |
| Using it for the other job | Does nothing to scale | Can damage group seals and components |
Which should you choose?
They are not interchangeable and must never be mixed. If the coffee tastes stale, clean. If the machine is slow or cool, descale — and check first whether your manufacturer permits descaling at all, because some specify treated water instead.
