Cleaning and maintenance

Backflushing an espresso machine

Also called: backflushing, cleaning the group head, blind basket cleaning

The standard cleaning routine for machines with a three-way valve. Cleaning, not descaling — and the distinction matters.

Your equipment’s instructions come first

The number of cycles, the detergent dose and the rinse procedure are specific to each machine and product. Follow both sets of instructions; where they differ, follow the machine's.

Why it works this way

Backflushing works by building pressure behind a sealed basket and then releasing it back through the shower screen, carrying residue into the drip tray. It only works on machines with a three-way solenoid valve, which is where the released water goes; on machines without one the procedure achieves nothing. Done with plain water it removes loose grounds; done with an espresso cleaning detergent it removes the oils that plain water cannot. It does not touch scale, which is a different deposit needing a different chemical.

What you need

How to do it

  1. Confirm your machine supports backflushing.

Look for it in the manual. If backflushing is not described, do not do it.

  2. Fit the blind basket into the portafilter and lock it into the group.

With no holes, pressure builds behind the group instead of through coffee.

  3. Run the pump in short cycles, pausing between them.

Each pause is where the pressure releases and flushes the group.

  4. For a detergent clean, add the dose the product states and repeat the cycles.

Measure it. More detergent does not clean better and is much harder to rinse out.

  5. Rinse thoroughly with several plain-water cycles, then flush the group.

Under-rinsing is the reason a machine tastes of soap afterwards. Rinse past the point that feels sufficient.

  6. Brush the shower screen and wipe the gasket seat.

Backflushing does not reach everything a brush does.

How to tell it worked

Clean-tasting shots, and water running clear rather than brown during the final rinse cycles.

If it did not work

What you saw, what to change, and why the change works.

  • Shots taste soapy afterwards

Change: Rinse considerably more, and use less detergent next time.

Detergent residue in the group carries into every shot until it is flushed out.

  • Nothing appears to flush out

Change: Check whether the machine actually has a three-way valve.

Without one, the water has nowhere to go and no flushing occurs.

Common mistakes

  • Using descaler in the blind basket

Descaler is an acid intended for the boiler, not the group. It can damage seals and components.

Instead: Cleaning detergent for backflushing; descaler only as the manufacturer directs.

  • Backflushing a machine without a three-way valve

No cleaning happens and the pump works against a closed system.

    Instead: Read the manual first.
