Safety
Follow the machine's own instructions exactly, including how many cycles and how long to rinse. Never improvise a backflush procedure on a machine whose manual does not describe one.
What it is
With no holes for water to leave through, pressure builds behind the group and then releases through the machine's three-way valve, carrying coffee residue out of the group and into the drip tray. Only machines with a three-way solenoid valve can backflush; on machines without one, the water has nowhere to go and the procedure does nothing useful.
How it works
Pump on against a sealed basket, pump off, and the pressure release reverses flow briefly through the shower screen. Repeated a few times, it flushes the group. With a detergent added, it also dissolves the oils.
Why people use one
It is the manufacturer-specified cleaning routine for most machines that support it.
What this actually changes
Separated by what it affects, because “improves your coffee” is not something you can act on. Where the evidence is thin or contested, it says so.

Using descaler in a backflush
Descaler is an acid intended to go through the boiler, not a detergent intended to go through the group. It can damage seals and components.
Instead: Use an espresso cleaning detergent for backflushing and a descaler only as the manufacturer directs.
