What it is

The cheapest thing in this catalogue and one of the few whose benefit nobody argues about. Coffee residue accumulates on the shower screen and in the group after every shot, goes rancid, and tastes of it. A brush shaped to reach around the dispersion screen while the group flushes takes ten seconds.

How it works

Stiff heat-resistant bristles, an angled neck to reach up into the group, and a handle long enough to keep your knuckles off hot metal.

Why people use one

Because old coffee oil is the most common reason an espresso machine's output tastes stale.

What this actually changes

Separated by what it affects, because “improves your coffee” is not something you can act on. Where the evidence is thin or contested, it says so.

  • Taste

    Real difference

Removes rancid residue that would otherwise flavour every shot. This is a genuine and immediate effect on a neglected machine.

  • Equipment life

    Modest differenceReasoned, not measured

Grit off the gasket seat means better sealing and less wear.

Who it is for

Worth having if

  • Everyone with an espresso machine

Probably skip it if

  • Nobody with a group head

Using it well

  • Flush the group briefly to loosen residue, then brush around and under the shower screen
  • Brush away from yourself so hot water does not run down the handle
  • Do it at the end of every session, not when it looks dirty

Cleaning and care

Rinse and stand to dry. Replace when the bristles splay.

What you could use instead

  • A cloth

Cannot reach behind the dispersion screen, which is where the residue is.
