Safety
Water intended for drinking must remain safe to drink. CoffeeHQ does not publish mineral-dosing recipes: home-formulated brewing water is a specialist practice with real safety boundaries, and anything intended for consumption should follow food-grade product instructions and local drinking-water guidance rather than an internet recipe. Installation on a mains supply should follow the manufacturer's instructions and local regulations.
What it is
Reverse osmosis is the most thorough water treatment available domestically: pressure forces water through a membrane that rejects most dissolved material, leaving something close to pure water. Pure water is not good brewing water — it extracts poorly and can be aggressive to metal — so an RO system used for coffee is always paired with a remineralisation stage that adds a controlled amount back.
How it works
Pressure drives water across a semi-permeable membrane; the rejected concentrate goes to drain. A remineralising cartridge or a dosed concentrate then returns a defined amount of hardness and alkalinity.
Why people use one
It is the only approach that makes water composition a controlled variable rather than an inherited one, which matters most where the local supply is extreme or highly variable.

Separated by what it affects, because “improves your coffee” is not something you can act on. Where the evidence is thin or contested, it says so.
