Safety
Plumbing work on a mains water supply, and anything connected to a pressurised machine, should follow the manufacturer's instructions and local regulations. Where installation is beyond what the documentation covers, use a qualified installer.
What it is
Where a machine is plumbed in, or where a tank machine is being fed deliberately treated water, an inline cartridge does the filter jug's job continuously and with far more capacity. In commercial settings these are standard, and the specification is chosen against a water analysis rather than guessed at. Several manufacturers require one, or a documented equivalent, as a condition of warranty.
How it works
Water passes through carbon and, depending on the cartridge, an ion-exchange or scale-inhibiting medium. Softening cartridges swap hardness ions; scale-inhibiting cartridges dose a small amount of a compound that keeps scale from adhering rather than removing hardness.
Why people use one
Scale is the most common cause of expensive espresso-machine repairs, and boilers are the most expensive part to replace.

Separated by what it affects, because “improves your coffee” is not something you can act on. Where the evidence is thin or contested, it says so.

Choosing one

- Softening versus scale inhibition
- They work differently and suit different machines. Some manufacturers specify one and warn against the other; check the machine's documentation before choosing.
- Capacity against your hardness
- Cartridge life is quoted in litres at a stated hardness. On harder water the same cartridge lasts proportionally less.
- Whether over-softening is a risk
- Water stripped of nearly all minerals extracts poorly and can be corrosive to some machine components. Aim for treatment, not purity.
