Choosing a grinder
Why grinder choice matters more than most other equipment decisions, and what to look for.
Blade vs. burr grinders
Blade grinders chop coffee unevenly, producing a wide, inconsistent range of particle sizes that make it hard to control extraction. Burr grinders crush coffee between two surfaces set to a specific gap, producing far more consistent particle size, which is why they are recommended for any method more precise than the coarsest steeping.
Flat vs. conical burrs
Flat and conical burr designs both produce good results; differences in particle-size distribution and retention between the two matter more at the professional level than for most home use. Consistency of a given grinder at a given setting matters more than which burr shape it uses.
What to prioritise
For most home brewers, grind consistency and a wide, steppable range (fine enough for espresso if needed, coarse enough for French press) matter more than motor speed or brand reputation.
Cleaning and maintenance
Stale grounds trapped in the burrs and chute go rancid and taint fresh coffee with old, oily flavours, so regular cleaning matters as much as the grinder's build quality. For most home use, brush out the hopper, burrs and chute with a dry grinder brush every few weeks, and empty any retained grounds from the chute after each use if the grinder tends to hold them. Some grinders support running a small batch of uncooked rice or a dedicated grinder-cleaning tablet through on the coarsest setting to dislodge oily residue from the burrs, but this is not universal — check the specific grinder's manual before doing this, since it is not appropriate for every burr design or motor. Avoid washing burrs with water unless the manufacturer explicitly says the burr assembly is washable, since trapped moisture can cause rust or damage the motor.
Deciding within a budget, without naming products
CoffeeHQ does not rank specific grinder products or brands — models change faster than a reference site can responsibly maintain, and doing so risks recommendations shaped by commercial relationships rather than the reader's actual needs. Instead, use this as a decision order: first, rule out blade grinders for anything beyond the coarsest steeping (see above); second, within burr grinders, prioritise a stepped or stepless range wide enough for your actual brewing methods over motor speed, brand name or extra features; third, weigh hand grinders (cheaper, slower, no electricity needed, genuinely capable of good results) against electric ones (faster, easier for multiple servings) based on how much coffee you make and how much time you want to spend grinding, not on price alone. If several models fit your range and budget, consistency of grind at a single setting matters more than any other spec on the box.
Calibrating a grinder over time
A grinder's numbered dial or stepped settings are specific to that individual unit, not a universal scale — 'setting 4' on one grinder is not the same particle size as 'setting 4' on another, and even the same grinder can drift over months of use as its burrs wear. Rather than trusting a printed number alone, calibrate by brewing a known recipe, tasting or timing the result against the guidance for that method, and nudging the setting in small steps until flow rate and taste land in the expected range (see diagnosing problems from flow rate, in the grind size guide). It is worth re-checking calibration occasionally, especially after months of heavy use or if a brew that used to taste right consistently starts running fast or slow at the same setting.
