Why it works this way
A single continuous pour and a series of pulses can put the same water through the same coffee and produce noticeably different cups, because they distribute agitation differently over time. Pulsing keeps the bed topped up, extends the total contact time, and stirs the coffee each time the stream lands. Continuous pouring is faster and gentler. Neither is correct: pulsing is a lever, and it is most useful once grind and ratio are already close.

How to do it
Bloom first, and let the bed settle.
Pulsing into an unbloomed bed produces uneven wetting.
Pour in stages, each of a similar size, letting the level drop between them.
Waiting for the level to fall is what makes it a pulse rather than a slow continuous pour.
Pour in the centre and spiral outwards, keeping clear of the filter wall.
Water poured onto the paper runs down it and bypasses the coffee entirely.
Keep the stream low and steady.
Height adds force, which digs into the bed and drives fines downward.
Aim for a level bed at the end.
A flat, level surface after the last drip means the water passed through evenly. A crater or a high rim means it did not.

Change: Use more, smaller pulses, or grind finer.
More pulses extend contact time; grind changes the resistance.
Bed stalls before the last pour
Change: Fewer pulses and a coarser grind.
Repeated agitation drives fines into the base of the bed, which blocks it.
Grounds left high up the filter wall
Change: Pour further from the wall, and swirl at the end rather than rinsing them down.
Coffee stranded above the water line never extracts.

Pouring around the very edge to wet stranded grounds
Water runs down the paper and bypasses the coffee.
Instead: Pour centrally and swirl the brewer to bring grounds down.
Pouring from height for speed
Digs a crater and drives fines to the bottom.
Instead: Low and slow.
