What it is

An automatic frother is a small insulated jug with a heating element and a magnetically driven whisk in the base. You pour milk in, press a button, and two or three minutes later it stops with the milk hot and foamed. Most offer a cold setting and a choice between more and less foam, usually by swapping a whisk disc. It is the answer for the large number of people who want a decent latte and have no espresso machine to steam with.

How it works

Induction spins a whisk in the base while an element warms the jug. The whisk both aerates and circulates, and a thermostat cuts the heat at a preset temperature — which is the important structural difference from a steam wand: the stopping point is the manufacturer's decision, not yours.

Why people use one

It is genuinely unattended. It also works with filter coffee, instant coffee and hot chocolate, which a steam wand attached to an espresso machine does not.

What this actually changes

Separated by what it affects, because “improves your coffee” is not something you can act on. Where the evidence is thin or contested, it says so.

  • Convenience

    Real difference

Milk foam becomes a button press rather than a skill, and can happen while you do something else.

  • Consistency

    Real differenceReasoned, not measured

Repeats the same result every time, which is more than most people achieve by hand — the result is simply not adjustable.

  • Taste

    DependsReasoned, not measured

Better than badly steamed milk and generally not the equal of well steamed milk: the bubble structure is usually coarser and the preset temperature may be higher than you would choose.

Who it is for

Worth having if

  • Anyone making milk drinks without an espresso machine
  • Anyone whose machine has no wand, or a wand too weak to be worth using
  • Households where several people want milk drinks and only one wants to learn to steam

Probably skip it if

  • Anyone with a capable steam wand who is willing to learn to use it
  • Anyone wanting to pour latte art — the foam is rarely fine enough to hold a pattern

Choosing one

What actually differs between them. No products, no rankings.

Whether temperature is adjustable
Fixed-temperature models sometimes run hotter than is good for the milk. Adjustable ones are worth the difference if you drink plant milk, which tolerates less heat.
Minimum and maximum fill
Most have both, and the minimum is the one that catches people out — a single cortado's worth of milk may be below the line.
Whether the jug is dishwasher-safe
Many are not, because of the element. Daily hand-washing is part of ownership.

Common mistakes

  • Filling above the maximum line

Milk foams over the top and into the base.

Instead: Respect the two marked lines; they exist because foam roughly doubles the volume.

  • Leaving milk to dry in the jug

Residue bakes onto the element and taints later drinks.

Instead: Rinse immediately after pouring, while the jug is still warm.

Cleaning and care

Rinse straight after use. Most non-stick linings are damaged by abrasive pads and by the dishwasher — check the manufacturer's instructions rather than assuming. Never immerse the base.
