Safety
Steam leaving the tip is hotter than boiling water and will scald instantly. Keep hands and face clear while steam is flowing, never point the wand at anyone, and treat the wand as hot for some minutes after use. Never dismantle a wand or its valve on a machine that is switched on or still under pressure — follow the manufacturer's instructions for any deeper cleaning.
What it is
A steam wand is a narrow pipe carrying pressurised steam from the machine's boiler, ending in a tip drilled with one or several small holes. It is the only common way of texturing milk that heats and aerates in one action, and that combination is what makes it the reference technique the others are described against. Everything a wand does is under the operator's control and nothing about it is automatic, which is simultaneously why it produces the best results and why it takes the longest to learn.
How it works
Steam leaving the tip does two things at once. Held just under the surface, it drags air into the milk and breaks it into bubbles; held deeper, it stops introducing air and simply heats and circulates. The circulation matters as much as the air: a well-positioned wand sets the whole jug spinning, and that whirlpool is what shears large bubbles down to the fine, evenly distributed ones that read as microfoam rather than froth.
Why people use one
Because it is the only method that gives continuous control over how much air goes in and when it stops. Automatic frothers pick a texture for you; a wand lets you make a stiff cappuccino foam and a barely-textured cortado milk with the same equipment in the same minute.

- More power is not simply better at home. A powerful commercial-style wand can finish a 150 ml jug before a beginner has positioned it.
- Articulation
- A wand that swings freely and sits clear of the drip tray is far easier to work with than one fixed at an awkward angle.
Common mistakes
Introducing air after the milk has warmed
Little or no foam forms, however long the wand runs.
Instead: Add all the air in the first seconds, while the milk is still cold.
Chasing a target temperature with a thermometer instead of stopping by feel
The milk is usually several degrees past its best by the time the reading is read.
Instead: Stop when the jug becomes uncomfortably warm against the palm; verify with a thermometer while learning.
Leaving the wand unpurged and unwiped
Milk dries inside and around the tip, blocking holes and making the next drink worse.
Instead: Purge and wipe as a single reflex the moment the jug comes away.
Cleaning and care
Wipe with a dedicated damp cloth and purge after every single use. Soak the tip periodically in a milk-system cleaner made for the purpose, following the product's own instructions. Do not pick at the holes with anything that could enlarge or deform them.
