What it is
A milk jug looks like the least interesting object in a coffee setup and is the one most often bought wrong. It has three jobs: hold the right volume of milk, let the steam wand set up a whirlpool, and deliver the milk to the cup in a controlled stream. Get the size wrong and the first two become impossible regardless of technique.
How it works
Steamed milk roughly doubles in volume, so a jug is filled to somewhere between a third and a half. The curved base and vertical walls let the wand set the whole body of milk turning; a whirlpool needs a shape to turn in. The spout then decides how the milk leaves: a wide, gently tapered spout gives a broad, slow stream for filling, while a tighter spout with a defined tip gives the thin, fast stream latte art needs.
Why people use one
There is no substitute. A mug cannot form a whirlpool and cannot pour a stream, and steaming in one produces bubbly milk and a mess.

- Size
- Match it to the drink, not to the biggest drink you might ever make. Roughly: a 350 ml jug for one drink, a 600 ml jug for two. A jug that is half empty steams badly.
- Spout shape
- A sharper, narrower spout gives more control over a thin pouring stream and suits latte art. A rounder spout is more forgiving for simply filling a cup.
- Handle
- A handle lets you feel the milk's temperature through the jug body with your other hand, which is the standard way of judging when to stop. Handleless jugs exist and are a competition-pouring preference, not a beginner's choice.
- Wall thickness
- Thinner walls transmit heat to your hand faster, which makes stopping by feel easier. Heavier jugs feel better and tell you less.
- Integrated thermometer
- Some jugs have a dial thermometer in the base. Useful while learning, and something most people stop reading once they can judge by hand.
Common mistakes
Filling above the base of the spout
Milk expands over the rim while steaming.
Instead: Fill to somewhere between a third and half — the spout base is a reliable mark.
Using one large jug for every drink
Small volumes sit too deep for the wand tip to aerate; the milk heats without foaming.
Instead: Own a small jug as well; it is the cheapest improvement available to a milk drinker.
Letting textured milk stand
Foam and liquid separate within a minute and cannot be fully recombined.
Instead: Swirl and pour immediately.
Cleaning and care
Rinse immediately after pouring. Milk dries hard and a jug washed at the end of a session takes far longer than one rinsed at the moment.

No practical alternative for steaming
Any vessel wide enough to form a whirlpool is too wide to pour from, and any vessel narrow enough to pour from is too narrow to steam in.
