Frothing milk without a steam wand

Safety
Milk heated in a microwave can superheat and erupt when moved. Heat in short bursts, stir between them, and never seal a jar before microwaving it.
Why it works this way
Every alternative to a steam wand separates heating from aerating, and that separation is the reason none of them produces true microfoam. A wand adds air into milk that is warming, so the bubbles form and are sheared in the same continuous process. Everything else either heats then aerates, or aerates then heats. What you get is real foam, usually coarser and shorter-lived, and entirely good enough for a milky coffee at home. The methods are ranked here by how fine the resulting foam tends to be.

How to do it
Automatic frother: fill between the marked lines, choose the hot setting, press once.
The most consistent of the four, and the least adjustable. The machine chooses the temperature.
French press: heat the milk, half-fill, then plunge briskly for about thirty seconds.
Forcing milk through the mesh is mechanically similar to what a pump frother does, and produces a surprisingly fine foam.
Handheld whisk: heat the milk, submerge the whisk just under the surface, run for around twenty seconds.
Fastest and coarsest. Start and stop it below the surface or it sprays.
Jar: half-fill, seal, shake hard for thirty seconds, then microwave uncovered for around thirty seconds.
Shaking makes the foam and the heat sets it. Costs nothing and works better than it sounds.
Whichever method, tap the vessel and swirl before pouring.
Knocking out the largest bubbles improves any of these noticeably.
How to tell it worked
A soft foam with some visible bubble structure, sitting on hot milk. Pleasant on a filter coffee or a milky mug; not fine enough to pour a pattern.

Foam collapses before the drink is finished
Change: Use whole dairy milk or a barista plant formulation.
Foam persistence depends on fat and protein, and these methods have no shearing to compensate.
Bubbles are very large
Change: Aerate for less time and knock the vessel harder afterwards.
None of these methods shears bubbles down, so the only control is how many large ones you make.
Milk is not hot enough
Change: Heat it further before aerating, not after.
Heating after aerating collapses the foam you just made.
Common mistakes
Microwaving milk to boiling
Scalded milk, a skin, and a foam that will not form.
Instead: Heat to hot, not boiling, and watch it — milk boils over abruptly.
Expecting latte art
Frustration with a method that cannot produce the required texture.
Instead: Enjoy the foam for what it is; latte art needs wand-quality microfoam.
